The 87th Annual Deerfield Valley Farmers’ Day Fair was held August 26th - 29th 2004.
It was great to see the many familiar faces of Wilmington’s residents at the fairgrounds last year. 69 Wilmington residents participated in brining in 817 exhibits. 50% of the exhibitors at last year’s fair were from Wilmington, however, their exhibits made up 64% of the total. This makes the Town of Wilmington the strongest exhibitor at the fair and also shows a great amount of pride in its work. Last year the fair paid over $1,800 to exhibitors in premiums, and it’s great fun for the kids! Let’s see some more of that Wilmington pride at this years fair!
On the Fair’s opening day, the weather was hot and sunny. The Fair’s Family Night continued to be a great success that allowed fairgoers a chance to ride all the rides between 6 and 10 pm with the purchase of a bracelet. The Lip Sync Contest kept the main tent packed from start to finish.
The Fair continued on Friday evening which began with the antique tractor parade, coming down Route 100 to the fairgrounds. Fairgoers continued enjoy the rides on the midway, the casino in the main tent, Antique Tractor Pull as well as the Bluegrass Jam session.
The heat was oppressive during the day Saturday, as the Fair’s traditional events and contests were underway, offering something of interest for all. With great pride and enthusiasm participants of all ages competed in the horse show, cattle judging, horse pulling, games, demonstrations and exhibit premiums. A violent Thunderstorm greeted us on Saturday night, putting an early end to the Horse Pull just after dark, and as Moe Harrington and the White Chapel Band had begun to take the stage in the Main Tent. Within minutes, there were areas of the fairgrounds beneath 6 inches of water.
The demolition derby was held on Sunday and this year’s event brought forth a record number of cars and participants. The heat remained and there were threats of thunderstorms and hail given in the forecast, but the event went off without a hitch.
The Fair Association is grateful to all participants and volunteers whose hard work and participation contribute to the continued success of the fair. It takes thousands of hours and numerous people to put on the Fair each year. Many businesses and individuals donate prizes, materials and equipment. A special thank you to you all for keeping this local traditional fair a part of our local history. We also thank the Wilmington Town Office, School District, Fire, and Highway Departments who help out, as well as both Whitingham and Deerfield Valley Rescue. Finally, thank you to the Towns of Wilmington and Dover, who have contributed financially in providing police coverage, and to those individuals who’d worked the shifts on the Wilmington and Dover Police Departments.
Planning for the 2005 fair has already begun. We welcome your ideas and comments for events and improvements to the Fair or your volunteer time at the fair to setup, operate, and clean up after the fun is over. If you are interested, please contact any of the fair association trustees. Our regular monthly meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm, at the Wilmington Fire Station.
